Ingredients That Make A Winner

January 10th, 2011 admin No comments

Whether we like to admit it or not, other people’s opinions of us really do matter. The opinions we have of ourselves, matters even more. Think about this for a minute. What separates the haves from the have-nots? Nothing, but your own fear and insecurities.

It has been said many times that Americans love a winner and that nobody remembers who came in second. The truth is like the joke that goes; this guy was praying to God everyday to win the lottery. After weeks and weeks of prayer the guy asked God why his prayers were going unanswered. God replied; you need to at least meet Me halfway and buy a ticket!

Wishing doesn’t always make it so not without applied effort. You need to take a gamble on yourself, a leap of faith if you will, and you will learn that the only difference between the haves and the have-nots is the overcoming and mastering of these fears.

Nothing comes your way without effort. I’m from the old school of thought that also teaches that if you didn’t earn it, it won’t mean as much to you as if you did. Expect the same in business. It may take you several attempts before you find just the right combinations of things that work for you. Just because the first couple or so didn’t work out mean that you’re a loser it means you’re a do’er, someone who’s willing to go out on a limb, someone who’s confident in there ability to stand and deliver when things may rise up against you.

These are the real winners not because they necessarily succeed but because they tried.

Sometimes when starting a new business or venture everyone, at one time or another, will have their fair share of nay sayers Just don’t you be one of them! It would be all too easy to say I can’t do this and I can’t do that, but why?

Don’t ever give up or cave in to outside pressures or you will always be asking yourself what if and I wonder. No one ever looses who honestly tries. If you have a dream or vision for yourself, you owe it to yourself to a least try. In my experience most of the people I know who have been the nay sayers are those who have settled for second best or have given up altogether.

Today I want to start my own internet company and compete with the Fortune 100 company’s! Pretty simple statement right? You bet! Why not? Realistically, what do we need? While these examples are but the tip of the iceberg, they’re a good place to start;

Desire
Ambition
Drive
A willingness to succeed
The ability to see loss as a stepping stone to success

Internet businesses are great places for people to latch onto their piece of a dream and the only place I know of where you can compete with corporate America equally everyday.

The only thing that can get in your way from realizing the dream is YOU coupled with your uncanny ability to shoot yourself in the foot. We have no enemies in business but ourselves and those nasty little voices we carry around that tell us we’re failures.

I don’t make a practice of using quotes but I stumbled across this one and I found it highly appropriate. The late great football coach Vince Lombardy was asked by a sport reporter about a loss his team had just suffered. The Coach replied; we didn’t lose, we just ran out of time.

Tell yourself something long enough and you begin to believe it. Have other people tell you something long enough you’ll not only believe it, but you’ll magnify it as well! You do not have to know everything there is to know. Surround yourself with those who can bring to the table an asset that your business needs and one that you do not posses. This worked for Andrew Carnegie and will work equally well for you.

Failure and defeat provide the fire we need to forge our will to achieve success. So rather then let defeat beat us down or call us a loser, embrace it, welcome it as a teacher and then move on never forgetting the lesson learned.

You are only a loser if you believe you’re as loser.

Quiz Your Goals

December 19th, 2010 admin No comments

Can you guess about the future of any organization by looking at the faces of few employees and observing them for some time? I guess that you can. Let me tell you how. Any organization that is heading towards worthwhile goals shows strong enthusiasm. The leader conveys the goals to the employees and the employees feel good about working in a organization that is not heading in a wrong direction or going downhill. The leader sells that vision to the employees and looking at the employees one can find out if they feel enthusiastic working or not.

If your goals are worthwhile and look attractive your employees will feel love working for the organization because they know that they will be reaching a great destination. While discussing about great goals let us quiz ourselves about the quality of the goals. The first question should be- if the top management set the goals or the common employees were involved in the process. Was goal setting a participatory process?

The second question should be if the goals are realistic. Setting highly unrealistic goals may dampen the spirit because they will always look unattainable. If you set realistic but ambitious goals, you can enthuse your employees to achieve them.

Regular feedback will tell your employees about how much they have achieved and if their achievements are in line with the overall growth.

Goal setting and goal achievements, both require employee participation of high order. They need to feel involved and inspired. Use right techniques to set goals and you will come out as a winner.

Goals On The Wall

August 3rd, 2010 admin No comments

Surprisingly few people regularly make lists of their goals and even fewer put their lists where they can see them. This article suggests that it is worth doing both. It also takes a look at the life goals of Minnie Driver and Genghis Khan.

A lot of money was once paid for the following famous goal setting advice given to a rich businessman:

Each night make a list of 6 things you need to do tomorrow and list the 6 tasks in order of priority. When tomorrow arrives, start on the first task and complete it. Then move on to the second task. If you don’t finish all your tasks add the unfinished ones to your list for the next day.

Goals could be listed for each day, each week, each month, each year and for life. You could even make lists for each project you are working on.

Recently, Minnie Driver, the singer was asked: “What drives you?” She gave a thoughtful reply:

? To live fully – to pursue every gift I’ve been given.

? To think what am I going to bring to this day as opposed to what I am going to get from it.

? I want to have kids and live by the sea and write records, have a great partnership with someone and maybe do some teaching.

Very few people could have come straight out with such a clear life mission statement. Minnie is going to make the most of her singing talent and give rather than get. She wants kids and wants to live by the seaside and so on.

Ask yourself what the main goals of your life are? Could you come up with a great list like Minnie Driver’s if someone put you on the spot? Do you plan:

? To become all that you can become?

? To help others become all that they can become?

? To live an extraordinary life?

? To help humans, animals and even insects?

? To see the wonders of the world?

? To love your neighbour as yourself? etc. etc.

It is worth making a list and revising it regularly. You can always change your mission statement or list of life goals whenever you wish to. In the mean time life goals will give you a guiding light for much if not all of your life.

However, goals are soon forgotten unless you look at them and revise them regularly. Some people put their list of goals on post it notes and stick them on their computers. Some buy computer software that will parade their goals across their computer screen.

I put my goals on the wardrobe to my right where I can look at it all day. This reminds both my conscious and subconscious minds to focus on the goals. They are thus much more likely to be completed. They will also be finished with much less conscious effort.

Try sticking your goals list somewhere prominent where you have a bit of space. My walls are already covered with A4 sheets of things I need to remember so my wardrobe is the only space left.

One of my goals on the wardrobe list for today is to finish this article. I now have the satisfaction of crossing it off my list and moving on to my next goal which is to prepare for a class I am teaching this evening.

We all need to get a move on with our goals before our time runs out. Genghis Khan’s life goal was to conquer the whole world. In the end he conquered a huge space twice the size of the Roman Empire but he died too soon to fulfil his life mission. At the age of 65 on his death bed he said:

“I have conquered for you a large empire but my life was too short to take the whole world. That I leave to you.”

Even after death, the power of his goal lived on.

His sons doubled the size of his empire. They invaded Russia, Poland and Hungary but as the Mongol armies approached Vienna in 1242, Ogodei Khan, the son of Genghis died and all his armies went back to Mongolia for his funeral. They did not return to Europe.

A century later his empire began to crumble. However, genetic studies suggest that 1 in every 200 men on the planet today are genetically related to Genghis. Some goals will never die!

What do Minnie Driver and Genghis Khan have in common? They both set themselves clear life goals. The resemblance stops there. Minnie Driver’s goals are much, much greater than the goals of the Universal Ruler – Genghis Khan.
