Personal Development Goal Setting

You must first be clear about what you want. This may sound like an obvious statement but the vast majority of people are totally unaware of what it is they really want. Their desires are not concrete. They know what they don’t want but they don’t know what they do want.

Ask someone if they could have anything they wanted in life and 98 out of 100 people will begin to describe everything in their life that they don’t like. They will tell you what they don’t want but have very little idea of what they really do want. Even those who have some idea of what they want do not have any specifics. They want more money, better relationships, a more fulfilling job etc., but they cannot describe exactly what this means to them. You need to be specific.

So the first step in getting what you want is knowing what you want!

Next you need to know why you want it. What way will having this thing, situation or type of person make you feel? Our feelings play the biggest role in goal-achievement. They are the essence of all desires. Every wish, desire or goal starts with a feeling. Think about this for awhile. If you can identify the feeling behind your desire and replicate the way you will feel if you were to have that desire you will surely receive it!

Next write down your goal. This helps you get even clearer. Describe your life as though you already have your desire right now. Ensure you include the feelings that will be evoked once you have your goal.

For example ? “I feel immensely grateful for my brand new Mercedes SL Class sports car. Every morning I feel exhilarated as I open the majestic black metallic door and climb into the black nappa leather-bound driver’s seat. It feels as comfortable as an armchair. The engine purrs into life when I start the ignition and I smile approvingly as I reach down to shift the gear stick set in its burl walnut wood fitting. When I speak softly the voice recognition system immediately jolts the CD player into life and my favourite tune fills the surrounding area. The drive along the street is so smooth and the engine is so quiet I feel like I could be floating on a cloud. Gratitude and joy begin to fill me as I realize that I created this.”

Next visualize your goal while you repeat your written statement. See yourself performing the tasks that you have written. Feel the feelings associated with it. Do this every morning after waking and every night just before retiring.

Ensure that you stay positive and focused throughout the day. Never allow frustration to creep in or impatience. When you become impatient you are affirming that you do not have your goal. Stay focused on the feelings that you know you will experience when you reach your objective.

Next, be open to new opportunities. Allow the universe to open new channels for you. There are an infinite number of ways you can receive your desire. If you can develop a plan for attaining your desire that is even better. If not, be open for new ideas that will come to you and formulate them into a plan when you get them.

The final step is simple ? take some action. Do something no matter how small that will get you closer to your goal. Arrange a test-drive, go look at houses in the neighbourhood you want, ring friends and invite them out to dinner. Do something!

When we take a small step forward the universe will take 10 steps to meet us. Follow these simple steps and your goal attainment is assured.

Waiting On Your Big Break Is Playing Desperation Life

June 28th, 2010 admin No comments

Have you ever put all your eggs in one basket? Have you ever had so much riding on one big break that if it didn’t happen you would have to move down to the zoo and live off of kudzu and stump water? If you have, you’re playing desperation life!

Desperation Life = Trouble Before You Start!

If you’re playing desperation life, then you didn’t do something right early on. Being forced to go for the big break could almost be a good definition of failure. You’re hoping for a last ditch effort to pull your dream out of the muck.

Sometimes a last ditch effort is all you need; most of the time, you’re playing Russian roulette. If the big break is your conscious plan then your strategy is sucking wind already.

The steady as she goes planning will increase your odds of success tremendously. You’ll find that your planning and strategy will fit the game plan very nicely as there will not be nearly as much pressure on you.

Success Begets Success!

Planning for the success of a project is much better handled when you are planning your strategy in bits and pieces. Small steps along the way will make huge strides. It’s like the question, “how do you eat an elephant?” One bite at a time.

Far too often, we try to take giant steps toward the goal line to speed up the process. And, then in the process, we end up farther behind because the faster we go the behinder we get.

Big breaks can just not be planned or forced. They just happen. Big breaks come to everyone at some time or another. If you think you’ve never had a big break, that’s not true. You might have not recognized it, but they do come around to everyone at times, sometimes very camouflaged but, there nonetheless.

Throwing Caution To The Winds!

The guy waiting on the big break will bet the whole farm on his idea. He is so sure that it will succeed that the sky is the limit as to what he will sacrifice to have it. As stated, these ideas work sometimes, but it’s the exception rather than the rule.

The pursuit of the big break is not wrong in and of itself. It’s just the approach to the big break that causes them to fail so often. We put just one strategy, plan, technique, or method into play and that’s all we got. If that one method doesn’t work, we’re up the dirty creek without a paddle.

By the same token, if we put together a bits and pieces plan to approach this situation, then we’re really not depending on the big break. We’re using the techniques that will increase our odds of success.

Too Tired To Sleep!

The big break then often shows up and right out of the blue presents us with a nice trophy. But the most frustrating part is when we try to force it, gamble for it, or spend every waking hour in a gut wrenching frame of mind hoping for success from it.

For example: We have all heard of the TV star that got his big break. He was just walking down the street and some producer saw him and made him a star.

Then there is the person who decides to go to acting school and learn the art of acting and makes his way by small steps to stardom. Maybe this guy will never make it. But, what are the probabilities of the first guy?

The second guy is making plans in a calculated manner and does not look for his help coming by just happening to be in the right place at the right time.

An Uphill Battle!

You should understand that depending on the big break is as unreliable as it is infrequent. And, it can also do harm to your motivation. Living by the desperation of a big break can become enough of a habit that you fail to make calculated plans for success.

You will develop the jack-rabbit start in everything you do and run out of gas long before you get to the finish line.

It can cause you to completely overlook a viable opportunity when it comes your way. If the opportunity looks like a big break and it smells like a big break, then make calculated risks and turn it into a planned strategy.

When You End Up With Lemons, Make Lemonade!

It doesn’t necessarily have to be avoided. It just needs to be approached with a different attitude than someone would approach the big break. I.e. The big break mentality.

If you consider the big break as an accidental occurrence, then life does not become a series of desperation attempts. Surprisingly, big breaks can be helped by natural occurrences that happen accidentally.

But, the worse thing you can do is to always be looking for one magic pill that will create a big bang and bring instant success. Living for the big break will be a sure recipe for disaster.

Brink Of Disaster!

Big breaks will come around in a natural response to the project you’re trying to complete. Take advantage of them as they come naturally; just don’t set up yourself for depending on them in a nick of time.

You might find out your “nick” is on the brink of disaster.

How do you know if you are waiting on the big break? Ask yourself, have you analyzed the upside and downside? If you have and can see what the risks to reward are, then you are not waiting on the big break.

You Won’t Suffer From Stress, You’ll Be A Carrier!

If you find yourself wringing your hands, hoping against hope, in fear of disaster, you’re playing with fire. And, the proverbial fat lady is just about ready to sing for you.

Have Your Cake and Eat it Too ? Triumphing over Mediocrity

June 26th, 2010 admin No comments

Are you tired of the same old existence? Do you want more out of life than what life seems to be handing you? You can rise above mediocrity but you must first change your mindset.

To begin, you must have a keen desire for change in your life. You must know what you want, even if you don’t yet know how to get it. Be definitive in your desire. If you only had a short time to live, what would you really want to see, experience and do? Manifest clearly in your mind what you want or need.

Concentrate your energy and thoughts about your desire on the here and now, and not on the past or future. Embrace the present and let tomorrow take care of itself.

Be patient and let go of any anxiety, disbelief and doubt. Expect and believe that you have your desire already.

Get charged up emotionally about your desire. Don’t just visualize it; feel it. The more you’re enthused, excited and charged up about your desire, the faster you’ll have it.

Daily, affirm to yourself what you want. An “affirmation” is “a solemn and formal declaration.” Believe that you will get what you affirm you want.

Clear your mind of any and all negative thoughts. Negativity leads to mediocrity. Stay focused in a positive way at all times on your desire.

Believe in yourself. A belief is a thought, which is a kind of energy. Your beliefs have a great influence on you (and others around you) and can work for or against you. Recognize and get rid of limiting beliefs that don’t serve you. Retain those beliefs that bring contentment and quality to your life.

Stay focused on your desire. The more you visualize, feel, believe and affirm your desire, the more real it will become. The more you focus on what you want, the more your thoughts will help produce that desire at some point in the future.

Clearly set your intentions. An “intention” is “an anticipated outcome that guides your planned actions.” A realized goal or desire is the result of your intentions.

As attributed to Lisa Diane, a well-know inspirational leader, to get that which you desire, you must have it (in your mind), think it (your thoughts form your perceptions which form your reality), speak it (speak only positive thoughts about it), and act on it.

If you intently follow the above, you will attract those people, things, and circumstances that will bring about your desire. You will be a better person for it, and you will have what you want.
